About
The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanity and Society (WASP-HS) is Sweden’s largest initiative on how artificial intelligence and autonomous systems impacts humanity and society and vice versa.
Research
Research within WASP-HS investigates the wide-ranging impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems. In addition to funding research projects, the program has helped build environments for research on agentic AI, culture and memory, learning, international regulation, power and politics, robotics, synthetic data, welfare state vulnerabilities, and work and structural change. Through the assistant professor and guest professor initiatives, scholars in communication and law, among other topics, have also been recruited to universities in Sweden, enriching the local research environments.
Competence Building
WASP-HS trains promising young researchers, enhancing Sweden’s capacity to understand the challenges and implications of autonomous systems and AI in society. The Graduate School builds the theoretical and methodological competence of its over 100 PhD students from 15 Swedish universities and offers ample opportunities for networking within Sweden and internationally. Through the postdoctoral scholarship program, WASP-HS fellows grow into independent investigators and experience new research environments.
Interaction with Broader Society
WASP-HS hosts several events throughout the year to facilitate networking among the private, public, and nonprofit sectors and academia. Research findings are additionally shared through WASP-HS channels and traditional media outlets, contributing to the broader public discourse.
